Settlement & Lifestyle

You have finally landed in Canada. You are exhausted, jet-lagged, and just want to grab your bags and get an Uber to your Airbnb.

Stop. Before you walk out the sliding doors of the arrivals hall, you have the opportunity to save yourself weeks of bureaucratic headaches.

In Canada, you cannot legally work, get paid, or open an interest-bearing bank account without a Social Insurance Number (SIN). Historically, newcomers had to wait days, book an appointment, and stand in massive lines at a local Service Canada building just to get this 9-digit number.

In 2026, you can get it before you even leave the airport.

TL;DR: Can I Get My SIN at the Airport?

Yes. The Canadian government operates a program called SIN@Landing at six major international airports.

  • Participating Airports: Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Vancouver (YVR), Montreal Trudeau (YUL), Calgary (YYC), Edmonton (YEG), and Halifax (YHZ).

  • How it works: After you clear customs and receive your official work or study permit, walk directly to the Service Canada kiosk located right in the arrivals hall. Hand them your passport and permit, and they will issue your SIN on the spot in about 10 minutes.

Here is exactly how the process works, the documents you need, and what to do if your flight lands in the middle of the night.

Step 1: The CBSA Immigration Interview

You cannot get a SIN using your Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction.

When you get off the plane, your first stop is the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) checkpoint. You will hand the border officer your passport and your POE letter. The officer will ask you a few questions, print out your actual, physical Work Permit, Study Permit, or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR), and staple it into your passport.

Only after you have this physical document in your hand are you eligible to get your SIN.

Step 2: The Service Canada Kiosk

Once you have your luggage, look for the brightly lit Service Canada desk before you exit into the public greeting area.

Because you are using the Service Canada SIN program, the process is completely free. Do not ever pay a third-party company or "immigration consultant" to get your SIN for you.

Hand the agent exactly two documents:

  1. Your original, valid foreign passport.

  2. Your original immigration document (The Work Permit or Study Permit you just received from the CBSA officer 10 minutes prior).

(Note: If you are an international student, your study permit must explicitly state that you "may accept employment" or "may work in Canada" to be issued a SIN).

The agent will type your information into the federal database and hand you a printed document with your unique 9-digit Social Insurance Number. Do not lose this paper. Guard it as closely as you guard your passport.

What If My Flight Lands at 2:00 AM?

The only downside to the SIN@Landing program is that the Service Canada airport kiosks are not open 24/7. They generally operate during standard daytime business hours.

If your flight lands late at night, or if the line is simply too long, do not panic. The government has recently overhauled the digital application system.

Instead of going to a physical Service Canada building the next day, simply go to your apartment, connect to the Wi-Fi, and apply online through the official eSIN portal.

The 2026 Digital Update: Thanks to recent federal system upgrades, processing times for online applications have dropped drastically. Once approved, you no longer have to wait weeks for a physical letter in the mail. You will be able to download a secure, digital PDF copy of your SIN Confirmation Letter directly through your My Service Canada Account (MSCA).

The Final Verdict

Your first day in Canada sets the tone for your entire settlement. By taking an extra 15 minutes at the airport to visit the Service Canada desk, you leave the terminal legally ready to be hired, put on a corporate payroll, and open your Canadian bank accounts.
