Who this is best for

Permanent residents (0-5 years), international students, and foreign workers from Nova Credit supported countries (like Mexico, India, Philippines).

Key Conditions to know

Preferred Package fee waiver ends after 12 months (requires a $4,000 minimum balance to avoid the $16.95 monthly fee thereafter).

Check StartRight® Eligibility

Eight years ago, I landed in Canada from Mexico and hit a financial wall. To get a basic credit card with a tiny $500 limit, I had to hand the bank $500 of my own cash as a security deposit. It locked up my emergency money exactly when I needed it most for rent and winter gear.

The 2026 Scotiabank StartRight® program exists so you do not have to repeat my mistake.

The Quick Answer

  • Who it is for: Canadian Permanent Residents (0-5 years in the country), International Students, and Foreign Workers.

  • The Core Offer: Waives the $16.95 monthly fee on the Preferred Package checking account for the first 12 months.

  • The Credit Advantage: Uses Nova Credit to translate your home country credit history into Canadian approval, letting you skip the secured card trap.

How the Nova Credit Bypass Works

Scotiabank is the first Canadian bank to partner with Nova Credit. This is the most valuable part of the StartRight® program.

If you come from supported countries—including Mexico, India, the Philippines, Nigeria, the UK, the US, and several others—Scotiabank can pull your foreign credit report. If you had good credit back home (like with the Buró de Crédito in Mexico), you can authorize them to see it.

This translates directly into getting an unsecured card immediately. You keep your cash in your pocket.

If your country is not supported, the program still offers a standard secured card route to get you started. Scotiabank also has one of the largest physical branch networks in Canada. When automated digital systems fail, having a human teller look at your physical documents is a massive relief.

A Quick Lesson on Canadian Credit

Your credit score dictates your life in Canada. It controls your ability to rent a decent apartment, finance a car, or eventually secure a mortgage. The system tracks how you utilize credit within the country.

Here are the cold facts:

  • The Baseline: A "good" score starts at 700 or above.

  • The Golden Rule: Never use more than 30% of your available credit limit. If you have a $1,000 limit, never let the balance cross $300.

  • The Penalty: Missing a single payment will aggressively drop your score.

  • The Long Game: Your score goes up the longer you hold and responsibly manage credit products.

You can check your official standing anytime directly through bureaus like Equifax Canada or TransUnion.

The Catch: The Month 13 Fee Cliff

🚨 Bank packages are not charity. The StartRight program heavily promotes the first-year value, which can reach up to $2,300 in combined bonuses, rewards, and fee waivers.

However, you must pay attention to month 13. The $16.95 monthly fee for the Preferred Package kicks in after your first year. To avoid paying this, you must either maintain a minimum daily closing balance of $4,000 or downgrade to a cheaper, basic account before the year ends.

Next Steps

If the first-year fee waiver and the Nova Credit bypass make sense for your settlement plan—and you have set a calendar reminder for Month 12 to avoid the fee cliff—you can begin the process online.

If you apply online, remember that you will still need to visit a physical branch to finalize the account. Make sure you bring your physical COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence) or Work/Study Permit and your passport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I open a Scotiabank account before I arrive in Canada?

Yes. Citizens from select countries (like Mexico and India) can start the application online before landing. You can wire funds so the money is ready, but you must visit a physical branch in Canada to finalize the account and access the funds.

What happens if I have no credit history in my home country either?

You will not be able to use the Nova Credit feature. However, Scotiabank will still allow you to open an account and apply for a secured credit card (which requires a cash deposit) to start building your Canadian credit history from zero.

Does checking my home country credit score through Nova Credit hurt my score?

Accessing your credit report through Nova Credit may impact your home country credit score depending on local reporting laws. You should review their terms before authorizing the pull.
