You landed in Canada a few months ago. You spent your savings setting up an apartment, you don't have a Canadian paycheck yet, and now the April 30th tax deadline is staring you down. Logic tells you that since you didn't earn any Canadian dollars, you don't owe taxes, so you shouldn't file a return.

That logic is costing you thousands of dollars.

I hear this from newcomers every single spring. You are afraid of the paperwork, or you assume the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) only exists to take your money. But the system works both ways. The government actually owes you money just for living here, and they cannot pay you if you do not file.

The Short Answer: How a $0 Income Return Pays You

  • The CRA needs proof you exist: Filing a return (even with $0 Canadian income) registers you in the system for tax-free government payouts.

  • Unlock the new Grocery Benefit: Filing automatically qualifies you for the newly revamped Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB). This year, a single adult can receive up to $950.

  • Secure your Child Benefits: If you have kids under 18, the CRA uses your return to calculate your Canada Child Benefit (CCB). This pays up to $7,997 per child under six, per year.

  • Deadline: You must file your 2025 taxes by April 30, 2026.

Why the Government Rewards You for Earning Nothing

When you file a "zero-income" return, you are essentially telling the government: I am a resident, I am legally here, and my current income falls below the poverty line. Because Canada has a progressive tax and benefit system, low-income earners get the maximum possible support. Since you haven't started working yet, you instantly qualify for top-tier payouts. But the CRA does not guess your income. If you do not submit the forms, they assume you make too much money to qualify, and they send you nothing.

The Three Forms Standing Between You and Your Money

Depending on exactly when your plane touched down, your action plan changes slightly.

If you landed anytime in 2025: You must file a full 2025 tax return by April 30, 2026. Even if you only lived here for two weeks in December. You will report the money you made in your home country before arriving, and the $0 you made in Canada. Filing this single document automatically triggers your Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (formerly the GST/HST credit) and keeps your child benefits flowing.

If you landed in early 2026: You do not file a 2025 tax return because you did not live here last year. However, you cannot just wait until next year. To get your money right now, you must manually mail two forms to the CRA:

  • Form RC151: This is the application for newcomers to get the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit immediately. Fill it out, mail it in, and collect your payout.

  • Form RC66: This is the Canada Child Benefits Application. Send this in with proof of birth for your kids so you don't miss a month of payments.

How to File Without Paying a Fortune

Do not walk into an expensive tax prep office and pay $150 to file a return with zeros on it. I made that mistake my first year so you don't have to.

You have completely free options:

  • Newcomer Tax Clinics: The CRA funds free tax clinics across Canada. Volunteers will sit down with you and file your paperwork for absolutely nothing.

  • Free Software: Programs like Wealthsimple Tax or TurboTax Free let you file online in about 20 minutes if your situation is simple.

Your Next Step

Stop putting this off. Claiming this money relieves a massive amount of pressure while you hunt for your first Canadian job. If you have your Social Insurance Number (SIN) and your arrival date, you have everything you need to start the process today.
