Banking

You just passed your interview, signed your first Canadian employment contract, and HR sends you an email with a simple request: "Please send a void cheque so we can set up your direct deposit."
If you are like most newcomers, panic immediately sets in. You probably haven't seen a physical paper cheque since the 1990s. Do you have to go to the bank? Do you have to pay $50 to order a custom chequebook just to give your boss one piece of paper?
Take a deep breath.
TL;DR: What is a Void Cheque in Canada?
You do not need a physical paper cheque. In Canada, a "void cheque" is simply a legacy term for a Direct Deposit Form. It is a document that proves you own your bank account and shows your employer exactly where to send your money.
You can download a digital, pre-filled PDF void cheque for free in about 60 seconds directly from your Canadian banking app (whether you use Tangerine, BMO, Simplii, RBC, or Scotiabank).
Here is exactly how to read Canadian banking numbers and how to download your void cheque today.
Why Does My Employer Need This?
The Canadian financial system runs heavily on Pre-Authorized Debits (PAD) and Direct Deposits.
Instead of handing you a physical paycheque every two weeks, your employer wants to wire the money directly into your account. To do this legally and accurately, they need a document issued by your bank that explicitly states your three core routing numbers.
They ask for a "void" cheque so that no one can steal the piece of paper and try to write a fraudulent cash amount on it.
How to Read Your Canadian Bank Information
Whether you download a PDF or look at a physical cheque, the Canadian government standardizes banking information into three specific sets of numbers. You will see these printed at the bottom of the document:
The Transit Number (or Branch Number): This is exactly 5 digits long. It identifies the specific neighborhood bank branch where you opened your account.
The Institution Number: This is exactly 3 digits long. It identifies your specific bank. (For example: BMO is 001, Scotiabank is 002, RBC is 003, TD is 004, and Tangerine is 614).
The Account Number: This is usually 7 to 12 digits long. This is your personal, unique account identifier.
When you fill out government tax forms or HR portals, you will be asked to type these three numbers into separate boxes.
How to Download Your Void Cheque (Step-by-Step)
Do not go to a branch to ask for this. You can do it from your couch. Here is how to find the PDF download button for the most popular Canadian banks for newcomers.
How to get a Tangerine Void Cheque
Log in to the Tangerine mobile app or website.
Click on your Chequing Account.
Look for the button that says "Void Cheque" or "Print Void Cheque."
A PDF will generate with your name, address, and the Tangerine logo. Save it to your phone.
How to get a BMO (Bank of Montreal) Void Cheque
Log in to BMO Online Banking (it is easier on a desktop browser than the app).
Click on your primary Chequing Account.
Under the transaction history, click the link that says "Void Cheque."
Download the PDF document.
How to get a Simplii Financial Void Cheque
Log in to the Simplii mobile app.
Select your No Fee Chequing Account.
Tap the "More options" icon (usually three dots or gear).
Select "Get Void Cheque/Direct Deposit Info" and download the PDF.
How to get an RBC, TD, or Scotiabank Void Cheque
The process is nearly identical for all "Big 5" Canadian banks. Log into your online banking portal, click directly on the account you want your paycheque deposited into, and look for a link that says "Direct Deposit Form," "Payroll Form," or "Void Cheque." ## A Quick Security Warning
Your void cheque contains the exact routing information needed to pull money out of your account (which is how gyms and landlords set up automatic monthly payments).
Treat this PDF like a sensitive document. Never post a screenshot of it online, and only email it directly to verified HR representatives, landlords, or government agencies like the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Stop Guessing. Start Settling.
Getting your void cheque is a great first step, but surviving your first year in Canada requires mastering a dozen other confusing systems. From building a 700+ credit score to figuring out how the Canadian healthcare system actually works, you don't have time to make expensive mistakes.
