When you first move to Canada, filing your taxes can feel overwhelming. However, the Canadian government actually uses your tax return to automatically send you thousands of dollars in tax-free benefits throughout the year.
If you don't know when these payments arrive, it is incredibly difficult to budget for your rent and groceries. To make matters more confusing, massive political changes in 2025 completely altered which benefits newcomers actually receive in 2026.
TL;DR: The 2026 CRA Payment Schedule
If you filed your Canadian taxes, here is exactly when your money will be deposited:
GST/HST Credit: Jan 5, Apr 2, Jul 3, Oct 5. (Note: Watch for the new "Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit" top-up arriving by June).
Canada Child Benefit (CCB): Jan 20, Feb 20, Mar 20, Apr 20, May 20, Jun 19, Jul 20, Aug 20, Sep 18, Oct 20, Nov 20, Dec 11.
Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR): Cancelled. There are no new quarterly payments in 2026, but you can still claim retroactive payments if you file late returns for 2021–2024.
Here is the complete breakdown of exactly what these benefits are, how much you get, and how to ensure you don't miss a payment.
1. The Goods and Services Tax / Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) Credit
The GST/HST credit is a tax-free quarterly payment designed to help individuals and families with low or modest incomes offset the taxes they pay on everyday purchases. You do not need to apply for this separately; the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) automatically calculates it when you file your taxes.
2026 Payment Dates:
January 5, 2026
April 2, 2026
July 3, 2026
October 5, 2026
The 2026 Groceries Benefit Update: Due to severe food inflation, the federal government introduced the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. Starting in July 2026, the standard GST/HST credit is increasing by 25% for the next five years. Furthermore, if you are eligible for the January 2026 GST/HST payment, you will receive a special one-time top-up payment no later than June 2026.
2. The Canada Child Benefit (CCB)
If you arrived in Canada with children under the age of 18, the CCB is arguably the most important benefit you will receive. It is a tax-free monthly payment that can literally cover your grocery bill or a chunk of your rent.
For the first half of 2026, the maximum monthly payment is $666.41 for children under 6, and $562.33 for children aged 6 to 17. (These amounts are recalculated every July based on your previous year's tax return).
2026 Payment Dates:
January 20, 2026
February 20, 2026
March 20, 2026
April 20, 2026
May 20, 2026
June 19, 2026
July 20, 2026
August 20, 2026
September 18, 2026
October 20, 2026
November 20, 2026
December 11, 2026
3. What Happened to the Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR)?
If you read an older immigration blog, they will likely tell you to look out for the quarterly "Climate Action Incentive Payment" or "Canada Carbon Rebate" in January, April, July, and October.
Ignore them. This is outdated.
In March 2025, Prime Minister Mark Carney and the federal government officially eliminated the consumer carbon tax. As a result, there are no new Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) payments scheduled for 2026. The Retroactive Hack: Even though the program is dead, you can still claim past payments. If you lived in Canada during the 2021, 2022, 2023, or 2024 tax years but forgot to file your taxes, the CRA still owes you that money. File your late returns immediately in 2026, and the CRA will issue you a retroactive lump-sum deposit for those missed years.
How to Guarantee Your Payments Arrive Fast
Never rely on the CRA to mail you a physical cheque. Mail gets lost, and physical cheques can hold up your funds for weeks.
Instead, log into your banking app (like Tangerine, BMO, or Scotiabank) and set up Direct Deposit with the CRA. This directly links your checking account to the government. When a payment date like March 20th rolls around, the funds will physically appear in your account before you even wake up.
Stop Leaving Money on the Table
Knowing your payment dates is helpful, but if you don't know how to file your first Canadian tax return as a newcomer, you won't get any of this money in the first place.
